Growth Responses of Harmful Algal Species Microcystis (Cyanophyceae) under Various Environmental Conditions

چکیده
Microcystis is a flagrant cyanobacterial genus forming heavy blooms in aquatic environments and often cause serious problems in the management of water quality. In Japan, Micorcystis aeruginosa and Microcytis wesenbergii are commonly found in natural eutrophic water bodies. Although they frequently occur in the same habitat, the mechanisms determining the dominance of the two Microcystis species are not yet clearly understood. To clarify the difference of growth characteristics between M. aeruginosa and M. wesenbergii, we examined their growth rates, using their isolated strains, under various environmental conditions such as water temperature, light intensity and nutrient concentrations. We also examined the effect of grazing on their growth. Growth rate of M. aeruginosa was significantly higher than that of M. wesenbergii under high temperatures (30 and 35°C). However, growth rates of the two species were similar at lower temperatures (20 and 25°C). No significant difference in growth rates between the two species was found under varying light intensities, nutrient concentrations or the presence of grazers. We suggest that, among the environmental factors examined in the present study, water temperature is the most important factor determining the dominance of the two Microcystis species.

Harmful algal bloom (HAB) produced by several cyanobacterial species is a significant threat to many aquatic ecosystems around the world. Recently frequent occurrence of serious algal bloom in Lake Taihu, Lake Dianchi and Lake Chaohu has become a serious concern in China. Although various methods are currently being used to control toxic blue-green algal water blooms, many of their techniques a...

The middle Black sea region has quite large wetlands, including lakes, rivers, ponds, marshs and large reservoirs. Lake Cernek is one of the most valuable wetlands in Kizilirmak Delta. The lake and its environment have a high biodiversity due to species richness and natural habitats. Therefore, it has been recognized as a Ramsar site. The phytoplankton of lake Cemek consisted of 104 taxa belong...
متن کاملBacilysin from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42 has specific bactericidal activity against harmful algal bloom species.
Harmful algal blooms, caused by massive and exceptional overgrowth of microalgae and cyanobacteria, are a serious environmental problem worldwide : In the present study, we looked for Bacillus strains with sufficiently strong anticyanobacterial activity to be used as biocontrol agents. Among 24 strains, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42 showed the strongest bactericidal activity against Microcys...
متن کاملSaltgrass, a potential future landscaping plant and a suitable species for desert regions: A review
Continuous desertification of arable lands mandates use of low quality/ saline water for irrigation, especially in regions experiencing water shortage. Using low quality/ saline water for irrigation imposes more stress on plants that are already under stress in these regions. Thus, a logical solution will be to find a salt/ drought-tolerant plant species that will survive/sustain under such str...
متن کاملEnvironmental factors controlling colony formation in blooms of the cyanobacteria Microcystis spp. in Lake Taihu, China.
Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) over-enrichment has accelerated eutrophication and promoted cyanobacterial blooms worldwide. The colonial bloom-forming cyanobacterial genus Microcystis is covered by sheaths which can protect cells from zooplankton grazing, viral or bacterial attack and other potential negative environmental factors. This provides a competitive advantage over other phytoplankton...
